Many of us are struggling with a growing sense of frustration, fatigue, or hopelessness when it comes to polarization — whether around politics, race, culture, or values. We may want to engage, but fear escalation, rupture, or the loss of important relationships. We may also notice ourselves pulling back, hardening, or shutting down.
In polarized systems, something fundamental breaks down: the felt sense of us.
Instead of experiencing ourselves as part of a larger whole, we experience only sides — “my side” and “your side.” This separation is a loss of our capacity to stay present, relational, and responsive in the face of difference. It makes it difficult to listen, to feel complexity, or to move together in any meaningful way.
